Why Australia is the Best Place to Live
by Joanna Hill : August 24th, 2016 Updated on: October 24th, 2023Australia is like no other place in the world. The Australian lifestyle boasts a perfect balance between work, family and play. You can experience a bustling city lifestyle, or escape to the country. Home to some of the most beautiful beaches and iconic World Heritage Sites, and celebrating a hugely diverse population, those who call Australia home are a lucky bunch. Australia is the best place to live!
What makes a great country comes down to a number of factors – the quality of life, the people, and the places.
Quality of Life
Australians enjoy a high quality of life. In 2015, Melbourne was again crowned the most livable city in the world for the 5th year running by the Economist Intelligence Unit’s annual global livability ranking. Another Australian city, Adelaide, also placed in the top five in the same year.
Let’s take a look at the reasons why.
Employment
Australia is home to less extreme wealth and poverty discrepancies than other countries, with plenty of job opportunities. According to the OECD Better Life Index, Australia boosts a higher than average employment rate. Around 72% of Australians between 15 and 64 have a paid job.
Life expectancy
There must be something in the water because Australians also live longer. The same study revealed that the average life expectancy at birth in Australia is 82 years, two years higher than the average of 80.
Fresh air
When you take a breath in Australia you’re breathing in some of the cleanest air in the world. According to the World Health Organisation, Australia has one of the lowest air pollution levels in the world. This is in comparison to some of the world’s leading international cities, who exceed the safe level of air quality, including London, Paris, Jakarta and Bangkok.
Community and culture
Australia is also renowned around the world for it’s laid back and friendly lifestyle – Aussies don’t take themselves too seriously. Spending time with family and friends on the weekend is high on the to-do list or many Australians. Backyard barbecues, hanging by the pool, and going to the pub for a drink are regular activities – work hard, play harder!
Australians also enjoy a strong sense of community. It was revealed in the OECD Better Life Index that 95% of Australians believe that they know someone they can rely on in a time of need.
Multiculturalism
Due to mass immigration to the country in recent times, Australia has an extremely diverse and multicultural society. Today one in four Australians were born overseas, and that ratio is only going to increase. With this comes an opportunity to become involved in many different cultural and religious experiences and of course, a wide variety of amazing cuisines!
Sporting culture
In Australia, sport is a national obsession. With too many ‘footy’ codes to count, a love of all things cricket and tennis, and some of the best swimmers in the world, there’s never a shortage of sporting events in Australia both on an elite level and right down to the local level. This also adds to the quality of life, with sports participation rates in Australia comparatively high. Melbourne also celebrates another victory here, with the city being deemed the sporting capital of the world in 2016.
Nature and climate
If you’re still not convinced, maybe it’s the beauty of the country itself that you’ll fall in love with. Australians enjoy a temperate climate with mild weather all year around. Whether you love summer and the beach, or winter and skiing, you’ll be happy – Australia has both!
Although Australia is such a vast continent, most Australians gravitate towards the coast. And why wouldn’t they? The country has a coastline of over 36,000 kilometres and some of the most picturesque beaches in the world. Australia is also home to 14 World Heritage Sites, so there’s plenty to see. Over two million tourists visit the Great Barrier Reef each year alone.
Being so far away from everyone else, Australia also has some unique wildlife. Cuddly koalas, kangaroos, echidnas, platypus – in fact, there are more kangaroos in Australia than there are humans.
How can I get there?
By now you might be asking yourself why you haven’t moved to Australia earlier. The good news is, Australia offers a range of permanent and temporary visas. So whether you’re looking for a bit of casual work while you travel around this beautiful country, or you’re after something a bit more permanent for you and your family, you’ll need to get the right visa.
