Australian Short Stay Work Visas are designed to provide flexible visa solutions for a range of short term Australian labour force requirements.
If you are an employer, organisation or individual looking to apply for one of the visas below, get in touch for tailored advice for your situation.
Temporary Work (Short Stay Specialist) Visa Subclass 400
The Subclass 400 Visa is for people who are needed in Australia to do short term, highly specialised, non-ongoing work.
In some circumstances people who are participating in work or an activity relating to Australia’s interests may be eligible for this visa.
Visa holders can bring family members to Australia with them holding this visa.
Generally Subclass 400 visa holders will be granted stays of 3 or up to 6 months. If a longer stay is required the 482 visa is generally a more suitable visa option.
Temporary Activity Visa Subclass 408
The Temporary Activity Visa allows the holder to travel to Australia to participate in certain temporary work activities.
The Subclass 408 Temporary Activity Visa covers a wide range of specific work activities, including:
- Entertainment Activities: work as performer in the entertainment industry;
- Invited Participant: participation in social or cultural activities at the invitation of an Australian organisation;
- Research Activities: participation or observation relating to an Australian research project;
- Exchange Arrangements: work in a skilled position under a staff exchange arrangement;
- Sporting Activities: participation in high-level sports competitions or sports training programs;
- Special Program: participation in approved special programs;
- Religious Worker: work as a full time religious worker;
- Superyacht Crew: employment as a superyacht crew member;
- Domestic Worker (Executive): workers engaged in full-time domestic work in the household of certain senior foreign executives;
- Australian Government Endorsed Event: participation in a government endorsed event.
Stay periods and application requirements are dependent on the stream of the visa being applied for.
Sponsorship is required for some streams of the visa.
Temporary Work (International Relations) visa Subclass 403 PALM Stream
The PALM Stream of the Temporary Work (International Relations) visa (Subclass 403) allows applicants to travel to Australia to participate in the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility Scheme.
Visa applicants must be sponsored by an employer who is a Temporary Activities Sponsor and approved PALM scheme employer in eligible industries and eligible rural and regional locations.
Visa applicants must also be approved by DFAT to participate in the PALM scheme. Applicants must meet requirements including age requirements and have specified employment and English language skills.
This visa can be granted for up to 4 years.
Temporary Work (International Relations) visa Subclass 403
In addition to the PALM Stream, the Subclass 403 Temporary Work visa also has streams designed for foreign workers who need to come to Australia to do temporary work.
This includes the following streams:
- Government Agreement Stream: For work that relates to a bilateral agreement
- Foreign Government Agency Stream: for certain representatives of foreign governments, or language teachers employed by a foreign government to teach language in a school;
- Domestic Worker (Diplomatic or Consular) Stream: for people working as domestic workers in the house of a Subclass 995 Diplomatic (temporary) visa holder;
- Privileges and immunities stream: For a person with relevant privileges and immunities.
Other Work Visa Options
For on-going or longer term work, Employer Sponsored Visas provide longer term workforce security.
Employer Sponsored Visas including the Subclass 482 Temporary Skill Shortage Visa and employer sponsored Permanent Residency visas target hard to staff occupations and locations.
For positions which fall outside the targeted occupation lists, a Labour Agreement enables employers to negotiate employment options specific to their industry or location.
